Free-falling with your finances?

Picture of Kathleen Skydiving with the words "free-falling with your finances?"

When I went sky diving for the first (and only) time (so far), I remember vividly how excited I was to get in that plane and take the jump.

No one could talk me out of getting in that plane and taking the leap.

I was determined to do that jump and make it to the ground safe and sound. Then I saw the plane….

It was this small plane that had no seats in it and only had 2 seats in it. Those of jumping had to sit on the floor in the back. Half of us without a parachute because we buckled into one another.

I will tell you this much, it was the worst plane ride up I’ve ever had. The door didn’t close, so there was this person holding the door closed to keep out some of the air. One of the windows was broken – it definitely made me question what I was getting into.

We made it to the elevation we needed and I was the last one to jump out (which isn’t the best thing to do because one second someone is there and the next they aren’t).

So you climb out of this plane and you stand on the wing of the plane. I stood on the plane but refused to take my hand off the side of the plane so my guide had to literally tear it off of the door.

I’m there on the wing with no safety except for this guy guiding me and my life was in his hands. If you’ve never gone skydiving before, the way you take off is that you have to rock forwards, backwards and forwards again. So you see how far you have to go and then you trust you aren’t going to far backwards off of the wing before you take the leap.

One you take off, you free fall for about 45 secs before you pull the Shute. During these 45 seconds, the wind is killing your face and you literally fear for your like (like is the Shute going to open or not) and it isn’t until you have the Shute open that you feel safe.

But once the Shute is activated, you feel discomfort and you have to readjust. But you feel more safe than you have in the last 5 minutes. And you just want to enjoy the view until you make it safely back on the ground.

Skydiving is very much like your finances. Going up in the plane is when we can’t wait to be adults and buy “our own” things.

Taking that leap out of the plane is us just spending Willy nilly without a plan or a budget.

Pulling that Shute is when we create our budget and we start to feel safe. It’s uncomfortable at first and you have to readjust along the way but you know you will be okay.

Finally, landing safely on the ground is reaching that financial freedom you are looking for.

Take that leap of faith and pull that trigger, the view is definitely worth it.

I’d like to know below have you ever felt like you were free-falling with your finances? How did you get through it?
